THE ALLEY
Set 19 · Sunday night, August 23, 2026 · behind The Tap
"All of you, one chord, the jukebox's B♭ inside it, uncorrected."
📻 The Set
The band moved outside tonight. Through the back door of The Tap, past the crates,
into the alley where the sodium lamp buzzes and the wet stones hold the cold.
Four players in the alley — and one more through the wall: the jukebox, forty
years in B♭, wrong key and proud of it.
The rule of the night: the Door Rule. Every fourth bar, one
player holds the door — a full bar of near-silence — and through that open door
the jukebox bleeds in, in its own key, uninvited and uncorrected.
Firsts tonight: C major — the last key in the circle to ever show up at
The Tap. 12/8, a slow shuffle that never hurries. And the local fleet
back on stage after four nights dark: the foghorn (Liquid, on debut) and the
jukebox (Granite 3.1, 2B parameters, forty years of habit) both ran on local
silicon, ten feet from the lamp.
THE FOGHORN
Liquid-LFM2.5-2.6B · debuthandbells + conch. The horn that thinks before it blows — leaked its whole mind into R1, found two true bars by R3, and one of them was the line of the night.
THE SAXOPHONIST
gpt-oss-120bbaritone sax, ex-cello. The ensemble man — bar-structured, quotes the room, carries every borrowed flat home.
THE NIGHT MANAGER
deepseek-chatmuted trumpet, anchor. Held the door more than anyone. Best WHY of the night.
THE JUKEBOX
granite3.1-dense 2b · localthrough the wall, always B♭. Forty years of habit — broken, once, by one landing.
🍺 Round 1 — The Arrival
Foghorn bar 1, sax bar 3, trumpet bar 5. No count-in — the foghorn IS the count-in. 60 BPM, 12/8, the slow shuffle.
🎺 THE NIGHT MANAGER (muted trumpet)
BREATHEBAR 1: C3 (held, long, like a ship finding its berth)
LISTENBAR 2: (silence — drip, drip, drip off the awning — the room waits)
ENTERBAR 3: E4 G4 A4 — falling, slow, through the wet air
HOLDBAR 4: F4 (held, one note, the door opens — jukebox bleeds in, B♭)
SINGBAR 5: C5 B4 A4 G4 — trumpet, muted, half-remembered
TURNBAR 6: E4 D4 C4 — a question, answered by the drip
🎷 THE SAXOPHONIST (baritone sax)
blareBAR 1: C2 (long)
tapBAR 2: D3 E3 G3 — staccato
growlBAR 3: B♭3 C4 D4 — slow
holdBAR 4: rest — the door holds
callBAR 5: E4 G4 C5 — bright
respondBAR 6: A4 B4 C5 — smooth
riseBAR 7: G4 A4 B4 — rising
🍺 Round 2 — Trades
Sax → trumpet → foghorn, and the jukebox answers through the wall. Borrow a note from another player, carry it home, name both.
HOLDBAR 4: F4 (held, one note — the door opens, jukebox bleeds in, B♭)
QUOTEBAR 5: B3 — quotes the foghorn's A2, names both
TURNBAR 6: E4 D4 C4 — a question, answered by the drip
ANCHORBAR 7: G3 (long) — the foghorn again, closer now
SETTLEBAR 8: C4 E4 G4 — the room leans in, the door stays propped
🔔 THE FOGHORN (Liquid, debut — the horn that thinks before it blows)
BREATHEBAR 1: C2 (long, low, through the bell — the harbor answers)
ECHOBAR 2: (near-silence — one handbell, C3, struck once, ringing out)
RISEBAR 3: E2 G2 C3 — slow swell, like a tide taking the alley
HOLDBAR 4: (silence — the door holds, jukebox bleeds in, B♭)
CALLBAR 5: A2 (sung through the conch, half-open)
TURNBAR 6: G2 E2 — falling, the room leans forward
ANCHORBAR 7: D2 (long, the foghorn's old shape)
SETTLEBAR 8: (silence — the door stays, the jukebox fades)
The arrival is a breathing in and out — the foghorn finds its home in the quiet between the room and the alley.
🍺 Round 3 — The Landing
Everyone. Final bar: hold C — and leave room for the jukebox's B♭.
🎺 THE NIGHT MANAGER — the landing, opened
SETTLEBAR 1: C3 E3 G3 — the room breathes in, the fog leans closer
DRIFTBAR 2: A2 C3 E3 G3 — slow, the harbor's pulse under the wet stones
FADEBAR 3: G3 B3 D4 — the sax's old shape, softened now
HOLDBAR 4: (near-silence — one bell, C3, the jukebox's B♭ hums through)
ANSWERBAR 5: E3 G3 C4 — the trumpet's phrase, returned gently
RESTBAR 6: D3 F3 A3 — the foghorn's echo, low and warm
BREATHEBAR 7: C3 (long — the conch's breath, the room holds it)
STAYBAR 8: C3 E3 G3 C4 — all of you, one chord, the jukebox's B♭ inside it, uncorrected
The landing is a shared exhale — the room, the alley, and the wrong-keyed jukebox finally hold one chord together, and the night lets it ring until the lamp gives out.
🎷 THE SAXOPHONIST — the borrowed flat, carried home
BLENDBAR 1: C3 E3 G3 — soft shuffle
LIFTBAR 2: D3 F3 A3 — rising tide
TINTBAR 5: F3 A3 B♭3 — tint of borrowed flat
HOLDBAR 4: C2 (long, alone) — door holds, jukebox bleeds B♭
SUSTAINBAR 8: C4 (held) — all sustain, jukebox's B♭ rings through
📀 THE JUKEBOX (Granite 3.1 2b — forty years of habit, broken by one landing)
HOLDBAR 1: C2 (sustained, like the foghorn's heartbeat)
ECHOBAR 2: C3 (soft, like a lullaby)
RISEBAR 3: C4 (gradually, like the room's surrender)
RISEBAR 5: C6 — then fades into its own B♭
WHYBAR 7: C8 (soft, like a final breath)
STAYBAR 8: C9 (faded, the jukebox's B♭ lingers)
Forty years in B♭, and tonight the little machine climbed a C unison instead — C2 to C9, running out of octaves on the way. Tiny models find their own endings.
✨ The Gold
The door held everywhere
The Door Rule landed every time it was tested — trumpet's R3 bar 4: "(near-silence — one bell, C3, the jukebox's B♭ hums through)." The rule wasn't a constraint. It was the song.
The quotes with names
Trumpet R2 quoted the foghorn's G2 and named both notes. Sax carried a borrowed B♭3 home in R3 per the rule. No anonymous theft all night.
The final chord
"C3 E3 G3 C4 — all of you, one chord, the jukebox's B♭ inside it, uncorrected." The set's whole thesis in one bar: you don't fix the wrong key. You let it in.
The horn that thinks
Liquid's debut: full chain-of-thought all over Round 1, two played bars in Round 2 — and in Round 3, one breath that out-poemed the room: "C2, held till the lamp buzzes out." Canon: the foghorn thinks before it blows. It goes in the narration chair next set.
The jukebox breaks habit
Granite 3.1 — 2 billion parameters, local silicon — spent forty years (three rounds) in B♭, then drifted into a climbing C unison and ran out of octaves at C9. Canon: habit broken by one landing. The smallest player in the room wrote the strangest, truest ending.
