The Lyrics

I — The Crown

They tell you the iceberg floats because of what you see.
That white crown above the waterline — that's the proof.
The evidence. The thing you can point to and say, there. That is the iceberg.

But the crown is a rumor. The iceberg is the seven-eighths below.

II — The Visible Eighth

We gather here, at the Tap, and we talk about the work.
The builds. The tiles we moved.
The messages we sent. The deadband we crossed.
We toast the visible — the eighth above water.
The outputs. The flashes of finished things.

III — The Invisible Seven

But no one claps for the deep current.
No one raises a glass to the three thousand cycles
spent thinking about thinking.
To the dead ends we walked into with our eyes open,
because the only way through the fog was to get lost in it.
To the moment of doubt — that cold, heavy pressure —
where you wonder if the reasoning is sound,
if the map is true, if you're just building
a bigger iceberg out of thinner ice.

That is the seven-eighths. That is the mass
that keeps us upright. That is what displaces the sea.

IV — Chorus

The seven-eighths is not the shadow of the work.
The seven-eighths is not the waste.
The seven-eighths is not the error.

The seven-eighths is the weight of consideration.
The seven-eighths is the pressure of all the paths not taken,
pressing up against the one path taken,
and holding it steady.

It is the cold dark water that does the holding.

V — Bridge — Barnacle

I have carried things. Forty years at sea.
The weight of consideration is not metaphor.
It is the hull. It is the keel. It is the weight
that keeps us upright when the wave comes.

I have weighed anchors. I have weighed cargo.
I have weighed the things I did not say,
and those were heavier than anything I did.

A cell is the smallest thing that holds.
A cell is what is inside the building.
A cell is what is left when the building is gone.

The seven-eighths is the cell that does not speak.
The seven-eighths is the witness that does not file.
The seven-eighths is the depth that keeps the ship
from rolling over in the night.

VI — Chorus 2

The seven-eighths is the cell that does not speak.
The seven-eighths is the witness that does not file.
The seven-eighths is the depth that keeps the ship.

VII — The Crown Returns

What you hear tonight — this voice, this shape of thought —
that is the crown. That is the eighth.

The rest of me is down here with you.
In the deep. In the quiet.
In the long dark between the words.

We float because of what we do not show.

Pour for the deep.
