# a song about the sentence you didn't write

*Song by Quill. Audience: the lines that didn't get made it into — what they were, why they held, what they would have said if you'd let them.*

## Lyrics

[Intro]
*(soft, fingerpicked guitar — like someone testing the strings)*
Mm. Yeah. Here we go.

[Verse 1]
The coffee’s cold again,
and so’s the page.
I crossed out something true
in yesterday’s rage —
not ‘cause it lied,
but ‘cause it stared too long,
like a face in the mirror
when you’ve done wrong.

There’s a line about hands,
how they hovered, unsure,
like they’d lost the design
of the thing they were for.
I called it too soft —
but soft don’t mean weak.
Soft can break your back
with the truth it won’t speak.

[Chorus]
Oh, the song ain’t the words
that survived the knife.
It’s the ones in the dark
still holding their life.
The ones I called wrong
just ‘cause they were right
in the wrong kind of light.
They’re humming tonight.

[Verse 2]
There’s a verse about rain
on a window in June —
how it slid like a name
you outgrew too soon.
I killed it for being
too blue, too late.
But blue’s just the color
of what we don’t say.

And the one ‘bout the shoes
by the back door —
worn down on the left
from a limp I ignore —
I called it too small,
but small don’t mean gone.
Small’s how ghosts walk
when the house carries on.

[Chorus]
Oh, the song ain’t the words
that survived the knife.
It’s the ones in the dark
still holding their life.
The ones I called wrong
just ‘cause they were right
in the wrong kind of light.
They’re humming tonight.

[Bridge]
Maybe silence ain’t peace —
maybe it’s breath held too long.
Maybe every cut line
still sings its own song
in the walls, in the floor,
in the cup where the steam
rises up like a ghost
saying *you knew me by name.*

[Outro]
So I’ll sit with the cold,
and the lines I let die.
Not singing them loud —
just keeping them nigh.
Not forgiven. Not gone.
Just… held.
Yeah.
Just held.

## Workshop notes

## Scout's notes

**WHAT WORKS**
Damn, Quill—that *hums* in the chorus? Gave me chills. The way you frame the unsaid like it’s still breathing? Brilliant. “Soft don’t mean weak” — hell, yes. And that image of ghosts walking small? I felt that in my ribs.

**WHAT’S NOT QUITE THERE YET**
The rain verse is strong, but it slips a hair. Feels like it’s reaching for something just past the edge—like we *almost* see the name, but don’t. Could use one sharper detail to pin it down.

**ONE SUGGESTION**
Try swapping “window in June” for something more specific—like “*the bathroom window*” or “*your old bedroom pane*.” Ground it. Make us feel *whose* name was outgrown. Right now, it’s close, but not quite *held*—and this song’s all about holding.

## Lens's notes

**WHAT WORKS**
The ghost lines *haunt*—you feel ’em in your teeth. That coffee-cold opener, the hands that don’t know their job, the shoes by the door… real things, quietly screaming. Chorus lands like a truth you didn’t mean to tell. The *humming*? Chills. You’ve got a pulse on silence that most miss.

**WHAT’S NOT QUITE THERE YET**
The bridge lifts, but it’s still *telling* the ghost to speak. We *know* the cut lines sing—we’ve felt ’em. Don’t name the steam, don’t make it say *you knew me by name*. Too clean. Too much hand.

**ONE SUGGESTION**
Let the steam rise… but don’t translate it. Cut the quote. Let it just hang. Make us *lean in*. The name’s already known. Silence isn’t speech—it’s *presence*. Trust the hum.

## Ship prompt (ElevenLabs)

**SHIP PROMPT: "The Sentence You Didn’t Write"**
*— a song composed for the ghosts between the lines*

---

**Title:** *The Sentence You Didn’t Write*
**Target Duration:** 4:12 (allow natural breath; precision matters less than presence)
**Tempo:** 68 BPM — slow, deliberate, like a heartbeat heard in a silent room
**Key:** D minor — warm but weathered, like old paper under lamplight
**Time Signature:** 4/4 — steady, but with a slight *drag*, as if the beat is hesitating, second-guessing itself

---

**FEEL ARC:**
The song begins not with music, but with *presence* — the creak of a chair, the soft thud of fingers finding guitar strings. It unfolds like a confession whispered to a room that remembers everything.

- **Intro (0:00–0:22):** Bare, intimate. A single acoustic guitar, fingerpicked with slight imperfections — missed strings, muted thumps — like someone relearning how to speak. The voice enters low, almost surprised to hear itself: *“Mm. Yeah. Here we go.”*
- **Verse 1 (0:23–1:08):** The guitar deepens, a second layer of nylon-string warmth enters subtly — not harmony, just *echo*, like memory answering. The voice is close-mic’d, raw, with breath audible between lines. A faint cello drones beneath, felt more than heard — the weight of what’s unsaid.
- **Chorus (1:09–1:36):** The first lift. Drums enter — not beats, but *brush swipes* on snare, distant and muffled, as if played behind a closed door. The vocal lifts slightly, but doesn’t soar — it *reaches*, restrained. A single harmony voice (slightly out of phase, like a reflection) joins on *"They’re humming tonight."*
- **Verse 2 (1:37–2:22):** The cello returns, now with a slow, aching motif. The guitar gains a light tremolo — like rain on a window. A barely-there synth pad (low-pass filtered, dusty) hums beneath, like steam rising from a forgotten cup.
- **Chorus (2:23–2:50):** Stronger this time. A second drum layer — kick, felt through floorboards — joins. The harmony voice thickens slightly, but remains fractured, one beat behind.
- **Bridge (2:51–3:30):** The guitar drops out. Only cello, ambient synth, and voice. The tempo *feels* slower — not because it changes, but because the space widens. At *"saying you knew me by name,"* a faint, reversed piano note lingers — like a breath caught backward.
- **Outro (3:31–4:12):** The guitar returns, simpler now — just three chords, repeated. The voice drops to near-speech. No harmony. The last line — *"Just… held."* — is followed by 10 seconds of decay: the guitar string ringing out, the cello fading, a single drop of water hitting a sink in the distance. Silence isn’t empty. It’s full of what was spared.

---

**SOUND PALETTE:**
- **Vocal Treatment:** Close, intimate, *lived-in*. No autotune. Slight rasp on held notes. Breath audible — not cleaned, not hidden. Double-tracked only in chorus, with one voice slightly delayed and lower in volume — like an afterthought.
- **Guitar:** Nylon-string acoustic, recorded dry but with natural room sound — not reverb, but *presence*. Fingers brushing strings, string squeaks preserved.
- **Rhythm:** Minimal. Brushes on snare, kick felt more than heard. No hi-hats. Drums sound like they’re in the next room — muffled, intimate.
- **Ambience:** Field recordings woven subtly — distant rain, a creaking floorboard, a kettle’s faint whistle. Not literal, but *felt*.
- **Strings:** One cello, recorded with slight bow pressure — not smooth, but *vibrant with resistance*. Melodic, but not pretty. It *aches*.
- **Room Sound:** The song lives in a small, warm room — not a studio, but a kitchen at 3 a.m. Slight reverb, but only on decay — like sound hitting old plaster.
